He had been afraid to go home when the thing was over, preferring to sacrifice his three miserable suits and the eleven small packets—though at the retail price these would be worth at least a thousand francs.
He would be caught one day, for his nerve was poor and he must be haunted by fear.
Pepito was infinitely more self-possessed. He might be waiting on some station platform to catch the first train. He might have gone to ground in the suburbs, or simply have moved to a hotel in another district.
Maigret hailed a taxi and almost gave the address of the Majestic. But he calculated that they would not yet have finished there. In other words, Torrence would still be in that room.
“Quai des Orfèvres,” he said.
Walking past Jean, he realized that the man already knew what had happened, and he turned his head aside almost guiltily.
He paid no attention to his stove. He did not take off his jacket or his shirt collar.
For two hours he sat motionless, with his elbows on the desk, and it was daylight by the time it occurred to him to look at a paper which must have been put there during the night.
